Introduction

Hong Kong’s local rice has declined for nearly half a century, and most experienced farmers have been lost.

Until recent years, people have gradually started to grow rice again. Different size of the farmland, different seniority and backgrounds of the famers. In 2017, the author visited more than ten farms in Hong Kong. Among the rice growers interviewed were full-time farmers, part-time farmers, or holiday farmers, so the book's title was named "Rice Growers".

In today's time when the history of rice cultivation is almost broken, why they choose to grow rice? How to re-explore planting technology? These niche stories and experiences of rice-growing are the focus of this book, and are also referred to as "the technology and heritage of rice production in Hong Kong".

Mr. WU Hand

Hand fell in love with the rural landscape when he walked into the village of Ma Shi Po. He fell in love with growing and selling vegetables as he started farming at SoIL (Society for Indigenous Learning). After visiting Matsushiro, a rice town in Japan, he fell in love with rice growing. Right now, Hand is re-cultivating Hong Kong rice in the Tai Po Lam Tsuen “Gift From Land” Project.
